Father’s Day has to include cocktails. Actually, any celebration should include cocktails but it is imperative to include liquor when celebrating any parent. My better half likes a good cocktail, but more than once he found himself sporting a pink drink in a girly glass in a bar or restaurant. And I could not perpetuate that on Father’s Day.
Punt e Mes is a deep and dark Italian vermouth with a distinct bitterness. This comes from Piedmont and is made by the Distilerrie Fratelli Branca and can substitute for regular rosso vermouth hinting a few notes closer to Campari.
The drink is a great summer cooler with hints of Cherry Coca Cola that come from the color and deep sweetness of the vermouth, the touch of cherry that comes from both the Luxardo Maraschino Liquer and the bitters, and the carbonation of the soda water.
I had the Point and a Half at Pizzeria Locale in Boulder and felt compelled to make it home. Pizzeria Locale was gracious, as always, and shared the recipe. Now, I am obsessed with it and I bet you will be too.
Americana aka Point and a Half
2.5 oz. Punt e Mes
.5 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
3 oz. soda water
3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
Your favorite boozy cherry for garnish.
In a shaker over ice, stir the vermouth and liqueur. Add the soda water and stir very gently. Pour it in a chilled wine glass half-way full of ice cubes (chill it with ice and water before hand). Top with the bitters and garnish with a boozy cherry.
Happy Father’s Day.
